The primary function of an SPD is to limit the transient voltage by diverting or limiting surge current. At normal operating voltages, the SPD acts as a high impedance, remaining inactive. However, when a surge occurs, its impedance rapidly drops, allowing the excess current to be safely shunted to ground or redistributed, thus "clamping" the voltage to a safe level for connected equipment.
